A family story of light, craftsmanship, and dedication

The history of Light Design van Loenen began in the 1970s, when Ben van Loenen and his wife took over Mrs. Wielders' lampshade workshop in Wassenaar. As a young girl, Yvonne would wander among the fabrics and frames, discovering her love for the craft.

On November 20, 1980, the family was unexpectedly struck by a serious accident involving Yvonne's mother. She passed away a few months later. During this difficult period, Yvonne and her father decided that the studio should continue to exist. It was the work her mother had put her heart into every day, and it felt natural to continue that dream.

Timeline with important milestones in Light Design van Loenen, from 1973 to 2025

In 1981, Ben and Yvonne opened Light Design van Loenen at Windlustweg 8. The shop was located downstairs, while the lampshades were made upstairs in the attic.

In 2007, Yvonne officially took over the business and moved Light Design to Van Hogendorpstraat 67. The studio was located in the basement there for many years. Ben often said it was a shame that customers couldn't see the craftsmanship, because that is precisely what forms the heart of the store.

After Ben's death in 2023, Yvonne continued the business with the same dedication and love for the craft that characterized her parents. In 2025, Light Design moved from Loenen to Langstraat 24, where the shop and studio come together in one bright, open space. Here, the craft is finally as visible as Ben always wanted it to be, and in the spirit of the work that Yvonne's mother once started.

With over forty years of experience, Light Design van Loenen has become a trusted name for handmade lampshades and atmospheric lighting. It remains a family business, supported by tradition, craftsmanship, and a warm connection with Wassenaar.
